pink doily t-shirt rug / pienk doily t-shirt mat

Hahaha! O! EN ‘n mat besigheid!

Hooray! At last! The doily rug pattern! I always think I can whip up the photo tut in one night! Seem to forget about the house, hubby and three children! Oh! AND a rug business!

It is quite a challenge to write a pattern for a t-shirt yarn rug, because the strips in every ball of t-shirt yarn differs in width, elasticity, texture. I do hope this one works for you. I’ve crocheted a few rugs in different colours and fabric thickness with this pattern. Enjoy! Please do ask if anything is unclear to you.

Brown version where you can see the different hook sizes. The brown T was a bit thicker than the pink T I used in the tut, but worked fabulous! (57 cm)

Ek stuur gewoonlik my patroon so bladsy vir bladsy vir my suster se dogter, Anne-Marie om dit oor te gaan vir tik, spel of hekelfoute. Baaaaie Baaaaie dankie Anne-Marie.

Whenever I write a new photo tut, I send the pages to my sister’s daughter, Anne-Marie. She checks them for spelling and/or crochet mistakes. The poor woman gets bombarded with late night emails and text messages! Thank you so much for your input and patience Anne-Marie! And whilst checking the pages, she started her own red doily rug.

Volgende patrone op die lys:

Die hart. Bwhahaha!

Sal ek hom gou môre aand opsit? Bwhahaha!

En dan die groot mandjie? Die aand daarna?

Next patterns on the list:

The heart. Bwhahaha! Maybe before Valentine’s next year!

The blue mandala. I wrote the pattern down as I went along. Shall I post that tomorrow night? Bwhahaha!

And after that, the large basket? The next evening?

Gaan hierdie beslis doen.

    • Tx Jessica!
Did you know that the t-shirt “yarn” strips that I crochet with are off-cuts from a t-shirt making factory?
fits right in with your eco friendly crochet!

  2. Jou matte is so uniek en stunning!! Baie dankie vir die stap-vir-stap verduideliking!! Gaan dit verseker probeer!!

Of het jy dalk al so groot patroon raakgeloop iewers? Dankie!

    • net ‘n plesier Martie.
As ek iets raakloop, sal ek jou laat weet

Ek time myself nooit nie.

  4. Thank you for posting this partner! I’ve been wanting to try my hand at a t-shirt rug and this is gorgeous. I am on Round 9 and the rug is folding in on itself. I thought it might flatten the further I go, but doesn’t seem to be. Is this normal? Your rug looks flat in all the pictures. Thank you!

  5. Hi Anneke, thank you for this tutorial! I love it 🙂 My question is that how many chains is the magic circle?

  6. Hello Anneke,
I love the Look of your rug and i really want to make one for my daughters bedroom. I think i’m going to purchase the hooked zpaghetti yarn. How many skeins would i need? One has approx. 120m. Unfortunately they don’t say the weight. Do you think 2 would be enough? Or 3? Thanks for your advice!
    Greetings from Berlin, Germany!
    Tina

    • Hi Tina
Let me ask a friend. We did a Crochet Along in a fb group with this pattern. And there we worked out the metres you need.
      Will let you know.
      Anneke

      • Thank you Anneke, for finding out! I am curious now!
I think i will purchase 2 of them and wait until your pattern for the larger doily is ready (i just liked your facebook-page and saw you are working on that!). Then I’m surely on the save side! 😉
Thanks a lot, I’m soooo looking forward to try that pattern out!
        Have a nice day! 🙂

      • Hi Tina
2 should be enough for the doily pattern. I’m not so sure about the larger one.
Please could you weigh your zpaghetti skeins before you start.
Then we will all have a better idea about how to advise every one on how many skeins to buy.
And please do show us your rug!!!
        Enjoy!

O, one more thing, I did a few pdf files for the Crochet Along. I will add them in the pattern post. They help a lot.

      • Hi Anneke,
Sooo i weighed m skeins and they are 250g. And I am almost done with my Last row of your doily rug. I would love to Show some pictures of the yarn and results. Shall i post it on Facebook Or shall i send it to you via email?
Thanks once again for that great and easy to follow pattern. ❤️
        Tina

  10. I’m a tatter but I find your rugs beautifu . It makes me want to learn to crochet so I can make one of those rugs!!!!

  11. Thank you for this great pattern, I love the lay-out of the tutorial! I tried to read the discription in het Afrikaans, but that was too hard for me 🙂
(I’m Dutch) English worked out fine, I made a rug with thick yarn, blended pink.

    • How many yards of yarn did it take. I’m not good a converting kg, gr, to yards. I want to make this rug, but not sure how much bulky (5) wt yarn to buy. Can you help me???

      • Hi Susan
It is difficult for us to convert the t-shirt yarn from kg to yards, because every ball of t-shirt yarn has a different texture, stretch and yarn width and length. What bulky yarn do you have in mind? Maybe I can work something out if I know what you are going to use.

  13. I want to say Thank you, for sharing your talent with us. I made the doily rug. I know it is hard sometimes to translate to English but in combination with the pictures it works beautifully. I would love to try the heart ? And the basket maybe but am unsure of where you placed the pattern…? Thanks again!!

    • thank you Donna. sorry, I don’t have a written pattern. I find that beginner crocheters prefer photo tutorials. I’ll keep your request in mind and maybe add a written pattern with future tutorials.

  19. Anneke, this is too awesome. We just moved into a bigger house and this pattern was first on my list to make. I’m on row 10 now and loving it! My tension may be too tight, it’s curling and bunching, but a quick wash and block should be okay to shape it, right? I used yarn I made from t-shirts. I will definitely be giving you a huge shout out when I’m done. Thank you!!

    • Hi Junee
What size hook are you using? I use a 12mm hook for t-shirt strips of about 2,5 cm in width.
Then it should not wobble or bunch. If it does, you should change your hook size.
Blocking could work, but the ideal would be for the rug to be flat when finished crocheting it.
Looking forward to see your finished rug.
      Regards
      Anneke

  20. Thank you so much for sharing your rug pattern,I love it. I’ve just completed one and it looks devine.
    Thank you again

  21. Where is the English version? This looks like a great pattern! Please make a button were it would translate. Thanks!

  22. Hi, I am using hooked smoked szpagetti tshirt yarn and a 12mm hook but my rug is bunching up and will not lie flat. Do you think my tension is too loose and I need to use a smaller hook? Thanks!

  23. Adorei!!! Obrigada! Beijinhos.
