Twisted Crochet Neck Warmer

Once you start, you can’t stop!

Warning!

Lots of twisted neckwarmers, lots of chocolates and lots of cake and coffee in this post!

A few weeks ago we had a crochet together at a friend’s house in Langebaan. She is busy crocheting a ripple blanket with REAL merino wool. If you look at and feel her blanket, you just have to try something with real wool as well.

Then I tried to copy a cowl/snood Dalena crocheted with Merino Wool. I used 2 strands ( African Expressions, Adore and Joy ) together and started with 70 chain stitches as per her recipe. Finished it that afternoon, but when I tried it on, it was a bit scratchy against my neck. Frogged it immediately. It was the Joy which is ?% wool, ?% acrylic, that did the scratching.

Then there was a take 2

Too thick!

Too thick!

A take 3

not happy with the stitch pattern!

And finally a very successful take 4!

And somewhere in between all these tries, I accidentally twisted my chain stitches before closing the round/tube! That’s what happens when your toddler pulls on your yarn an hops on and around you.

This one ended up with a double twist!

image

I prefer the single twist one and tried to do a picture tutorial for you. Hope this helps you. Once you do the twist at the beginning of you second round, you just go round and round. NO slip stitches to close a round nor any chain stitches to start a new round. Simply and merrily and easily dc, ch1, all around!

Play around with 50 gram skeins, and see what happens. Put different colours and textures together and surprise yourself! Make seven for yourself. One for each day of the week. And then, start making lots more to give or sell to your friends!

The 50 stitches one was for the smaller neck warmer for Anya. Different yarn combinations would need a different number of stitches. Any number between 50 and 70 can work. You’ll get a feel for it after your first try.

So grab a skein or two and a large hook and start your twisted neck warmer!

Anya asked for a blue one. I started her first one with 40 stitches. Here she is trying it on.

The second try with 50 stitches was perfect!

Then came a few more. [ All this whilst I was suppose to finish the larger pink doily rug tutorial for one of the Facebook crochet groups I belong to. We have a CAL in June and about 700 members are crocheting the doily rug! Exciting hey!]

      • Dankie. Jy is n dierbare liefie.

Lekker kuier in Knysna. Groete. Marietjie

    • Mama Spins, it depends on the yarn you are using. If I use 2 strands of double knit yarn together, I use a 12 mm hook.
If I use one strand of double knit yarn, I use a 6 mm hook. Your beginning chain should be about 55cm long.

  10. Dear Anneke, I love your blog, your patterns, your T-shirt rugs, PATERNOSTER! So proud South African Crochet Designers are making a big mark on the international stage! Thank you for this lovely pattern and post

  11. Ai maar ek is so lus om te probeer maar hier in die verre noorde is dit te warm vir hierdie om die nek ding. Wonder of mens dit heelwat langer kan maak?

  12. so utterly thrilled to find a South African designer on pinterest…saw crochetinpaternoster and went “Hey, it cant be can it?” Yay! love the neck warmer and have immediately followed you. Thanks so much, I will give it a try as soon as I am done with my scarf( my first crochet piece ever!)

      • Hi I had a look at your other tutorial, thank you makes it look much easier. I am not a very experieced knitter and find the Strawberries and Cream splits so am struggling a bit! I think I crochet too tightly and also I see in the comments that for the 2 strands you used a 12mm hook, I was using a 6mm, so maybe that is why it was so tight.I am determined to get it right as they are stunning and would so like to give them as teacher gifts! One question, are you using UK or US terminology as my doublr knit UK is very small and dense Many thanks.

      • Hi Kiki
        I use US Terminology.
If you struggle with the Strawberries&Cream, rather use any other soft Double Knit yarn or cotton.
For one strand a 6 or 7 mm hook is fine. For two strands together, a 10 or 12 mm hook will work.
Are you on our Facebook Page? I have an album there where I show other people’s twisties and what yarn they used.
        Regards
        Anneke
