A day in the life of a crocheted rug

Up until today I had quite a comfy and cosy life sitting on my maker’s lap while she crocheted me. She mostly crochets at night when she’s done with all her house chores and when her three children are in bed. I must say I’m also very relieved once they go to bed because they can be very demanding and noisy when they’re awake! The toddler sometimes jumps onto the maker’s back while she is sitting on the couch crocheting me. The fire keeps us both warm as the night fades into the early hours of morning.

I sometimes feel like a celebrity because during the making process my maker takes lots and lots of photos of me. First she sweeps and cleans the floor. And then she puts me down carefully; softly smooths me till I lay nice and flat. Then she takes photos from all kinds of angles. Usually the toddler girl jumps up and down on me and wants to be in the photo as well.

Then she puts me down on a chair where I lay all day long observing everyone in the house. Then at night time she picks me up again and add another round or two to my body. Last night she did the final round. That was very late. Towards the end one round can take up to an hour. If she’s not happy with the way the round looks or if I don’t want to lie flat after a round, she would rip it out. Not a nice feeling! She lets the toddler pull on the yarn while she stands on me and the the maker rolls the string onto a ball. Quite a ticklish and sometimes painful experience!

Today was my first trip outside! She folded me up neatly and carried me to the car. We drove to another seaside village. Everybody in the family also jumped into the car. They went for a picnic at the beach and she put me onto the sand and sea shells and on rocks and took photos. It was lovely to be outside on the beach and in sunshine. After a few hours we all got back into the car and went home again.

The next day she threw me over a washing line and brushed and beat me with a small broom. Awful, but she got all the beach sand out of me. Then I was thrown into a washing machine. Very wet! Very hot! Dizzyingly spinning round and round. Then onto the washing line again for a very relaxing day in the sun. The next day she wrapped me up tight in bubble wrap plastic and mailed me off to someone that bought me from her. I do hope that my new owner will be just a bit more gentle with me.
